Using the Performance Page in Aiode

The Performance page is your space to guide musicians on how you'd like a specific region to be played.

How to Access the Performance Page

You can enter the Performance view in three easy ways:

  1. Double-click any region on the timeline or click the performance icon on the region.

  2. Click the performance icon located at the top left corner above the timeline.

  3. Use the keyboard shortcut: press 3 to jump directly into the Performance view.

Understanding the Logic of the Performance Controls

The Performance interface centers around three main components: Toggles, Knobs, and (soon) Custom Parameters.

Toggles: Give Options, Not Orders

Toggles offer suggestions rather than commands. Here's how they work:

  • Enabling a toggle signals to the musician that this is an option to consider.

  • The musician may choose one of the enabled options or blend between them.

  • If all toggles are active, the musician has full freedom to interpret the part expressively.

  • If only one is active, the performance will focus more directly on that specific style or feeling.

Knobs: Set Direction with Flexibility

Knobs allow you to shape continuous performance elements. They don't prescribe a single outcome but guide the musician’s interpretation.

The knobs available:

  • Dynamics – Controls musical intensity.

  • Complexity – Sets how simple or intricate the part is.

  • Fills – Determines how often transitions are added.

How the Range Works

  • The arc around each knob represents the range of variation you allow.

  • A full arc gives the musician freedom to move anywhere along that spectrum.

  • Narrowing the arc provides more specific direction.

  • Right side = High, Left side = Low. Adjust the arc to steer the performance.

Custom Parameters

These upcoming controls offer more granular influence over performance:

  • Yellow – Musician chooses how to interpret.

  • Purple – Parameter is actively applied.

  • Gray – Parameter is turned off.

Additional Tips

  • Tailor your controls to each region for different moods across your song.

  • Use a combination of toggles and knobs for layered, expressive guidance.

  • Think carefully about your instructions — the better they align with your musical intent, the better the result.

  • Save time with the keyboard shortcut (3) to jump back into Performance view while staying in the creative flow.

This page is designed to help you shape how your music is performed without locking you into rigid instructions. Think of it as a flexible, dynamic canvas that balances your creative direction with the interpretive abilities of your virtual musicians.
